Chronometric techniques include radiometric dating and radio-carbon dating, which both determine the age of materials through the decay of their radioactive elements; dendrochronology, which dates events and environmental conditions by studying tree growth rings; fluorine testing, which dates bones by calculating their fluorine content; pollen analysis, which identifies the number and type of pollen in a sample to place it in the correct historical period; and thermoluminescence, which dates ceramic materials by measuring their stored energy.Scientists first developed absolute dating techniques at the end of the 19th century.The results for all three protocols were fairly consistent, and TL and p IRIR290 protocols are shown to be suitable to estimate reliable equivalent doses for the fired kiln walls.The resulting ages are in agreement with the expected time range—Roman Iron Age—and with independent age control provided by radiocarbon ages of animal bones and charcoal from the firing chamber.The present work contributes to this continuous updating, using the latest evaluated nuclear data for the 238 U-, 235 U-and 232 Th-series, as well as for 40 K and 87 Rb, obtained from the Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF) database and the Nuclear Wallet Cards.An estimate of the accuracy of the dose-rate conversion factors is further attempted for the first time, by taking into account individual uncertainties in all quantities involved in the calculations.
